6 Tips on How to Blog Effectively for Business

 
Effective blogging can add value to your business, create loyal customers and attract potential clients.  Here are six business blogging tips to help you increase the effectiveness of your blog.

1. Don’t talk about yourself!
Resist the urge to self-promote on your blog. Bloggers who make their blog one big sales pitch will quickly turn off readers who are looking for useful information – not a product pitch.  

For example, our friends at HubSpot have two blogs: blog.hubspot.com, which has over 55,000 subscribers and www.hubspot.com/blog, which only has 1,500 subscribers. What’s the difference between the two? The more popular blog is HubSpot’s educational blog on marketing where they share information, tips, and advice for the industry. The other (and far less popular) blog is the product and company news blog, where HubSpot announces new products and company news.

2. Get your own URL
Many blogging sites today offer free blog setups, like companyname.wordpress.com or companyname.blogspot.com. However, the problem with this is that all of the inbound links that your blog gets actually helps the rankings of these blogging sites instead of your own company.

By setting up your own URL, like companyname.com/blog, you benefit from all of the links coming to your blog.

3. Optimize your posts for search engines
Create keyword rich links in your blog posts that link to other pages on your website. By doing this, you are adding power and ranking to your site and optimizing your site for search engines.

Dharmesh Shah, the author of OnStartUps.com (one of the most followed blogs on the internet), told me once that he spends about 30 minutes actually writing a blog post, and then another 30 making sure it is optimized for Google. However, when you write a blog post, don’t focus entirely on the search engines - be sure you are also writing for humans.

4. Blog consistently
Regular blogging allows you to  build a consistent following and position yourself as a thought leader in your field. Your blog SEO will also benefit from consisting blogging - the more you blog, the more Google will crawl your site.

Blogging for business does not accrue results overnight, but consistent blogging will help you achieve better results from your blogging efforts.

5. Allow Comments
One of the scariest things for new business bloggers is that pesky comment section. Many businesses are scared to allow just anyone to comment on their blogs, but you need to be able to connect with your audience. Respond to commentors on your blog, answer their questions, ask them questions, and see how you can help them.

6. Use multimedia
Using multimedia can transform your blog from a boring read into a visually stimulating webpage. Adding an image, audio, or video is an effective and simple way to drive more traffic to your blog and enhance the reading experience of your readers.
